Eve's Seed (Book recommendation). - sgonvw - 05-02-2013

Hey all,

This post might go under "Sightings," too, but it seemed more like a discussion post.

Anyway, Eve's Seed is one of the most interesting books I've ever read. The author is a professor and historian of the Great Depression who took a huge disciplinary leap and decided to write a global history of sexism. His theory rests on the idea that male aggressiveness and subordination of women arose in part because--at least before the invention of agriculture--men's biological purpose wasn't very clear, and men often suffered from "womb envy." Several mpreg-related ideas come up in the book, especially the widespread practice of "couvade" in various parts of the world.

I recommend it highly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eve's_Seed:_Biology,_the_Sexes,_and_the_Course_of_History
