Has anyone else noticed in some threads where a poster has an attachment on their posts but the thumbnail doesn't show up and instead itt tells you the file size and how many downloads the pictures have gotten. Is there a reason for the difference? Now I'm curious how many downloads my pictures have gotten.

I don't know why some show up differently, but if you're just looking to satisfy your curiosity, you can go to the User CP and click on the Manage Attachments in the Miscellaneous section.
