how do I add a photo/avatar to my profile? I've tried everything but can't figure it out.

In the upper left-hand corner of your screen, there is a link that says "User CP"

If you click on that, it takes you to your user control panel. 

On the left-hand side of the control panel, there's a list of things you can do. Under "My Profile" there's a link to click on for "change avatar"
