Nolan opened the curtains in his room. Nagi stood at the window, watching the family garden with thoughtfulness. Spring was coming...

Out of habit, he glanced at the window opposite. His neighbor and friend. With a small longing, he sighed. It had been so long since they had spoken. He missed him.

He was snapped out of his thoughts by the voice of his lover. The young economics student picked himself up and walked over, sitting down on the bed next to his boyfriend. He kissed him on the cheek and laid his head on his torso.

Thomas was laying in bed, his window wide open. He could see the outline of his ex-best mate in the next window over but it wasn’t very clear. The only reason they weren’t talking anymore was because Nolan had no time to spend with him and Thomas had had enough of it. He remembered finally snapping and telling Nolan to ‘piss off cause he clearly doesn’t want to be his mate’.

That was a few months ago now, Thomas tried to get out more often now and had made many more mates. None of them were like Nolan though. They just didn’t get him like Nolan had.

Little did they both know that this Tuesday would reunite their paths, but only for a fraction of a moment.

It was a tough time for students. Assignments for credit and upcoming exams. Everyone was walking around stressed and very winded. Therefore, each drama was an exception and an interesting phenomenon.

And it was about Nolan Kingston and his boyfriend Xavier. The couple had a rather sharp argument that ended in a breakup. Nolan walked weeping down the corridor heading for the exit. He also passed Thomas

Thomas had been studying with his mates in the library, it was the only time they ever did it. Usually, at school they played football and then on the weekends they would go out and get drunk, run about and do stupid things. They had only really decided to do it because they heard the girls talking about doing it and they had wanted to join them.

He had heard the rumour about Nolan but didn’t think it to be true unless he saw him running to the nearest exit whilst crying. He wondered if he should go and check up on him but remembered that Nolan never checked up on him when he needed it. He was always too busy with his boyfriend to check up on Thomas.

Then an unheard of thing happened. Nolan did not come to the university after that day. Not even for exams. Only once was he seen about a month later heading to the dean's office. That was the last time the other students saw him.

Two months later, Nolan's mother showed up at Thomas' house. Their parents continued to meet despite the bickering between the boys. They had a lot in common.
"Good morning, Thomas..." said a neighbor, "Handsome boy as always."

Thomas found himself missing Nolan, he had thought with their friendship ending he would hate him but not seeing him made him realise just how much he wanted to be friends with him. He found himself getting into trouble more often than not. He got high more and into fights too.

He hadn’t expected Nolan’s parents to be over. He had just woken up and had a hangover, his head was spinning so he went downstairs to get some medicine. “Good morning”, he croakily replied and then said, “thank you”.

Nolan's mom looked at Thomas investigatively, but didn't say a word. She immediately took a sip of coffee.
"Come join us for dinner.... You too Thomas. It's been a long time since you saw Nolan," she said, and then looked at her husband with a small smile.

He glanced at his mum, who knew they had fallen out, to see her nod encouragingly. “Sure”, he said, running a hand through his hair. Thomas sighed thinking about the times he had willingly gone over to hang out with Nolan before the friendship had fallen apart.

The woman smiled contentedly. Then she glanced at her friend and caught her hand lightly.
"I envy you so much.... Thomas is still studying and he's getting really handsome" she replied "My Nolan has bad taste unfortunately.... That's why he sits mostly at home now. He's broken down, but he's getting better."

Thomas listened in whilst getting some paracetamol, this was interesting news. He wondered if Nolan’s parents knew they weren’t friends anymore and if they would reveal anything else that had changed about Nolan.

"I think Thomas' company will do him good" replied Nolan's father "Besides, I think he misses you" he added and looked at the clock "Let's go, Nolan has a doctor's appointment".

Thomas was shocked, Nolan missed him? He doubted it. The last time they had spoken, Nolan wanted nothing to do with him. His ears perked when he heard that he had a doctors appointment, “how comes?”, he asked, butting in.

Nolan's mother smiled slightly.
"I think you'll figure it out for yourself tomorrow night," she replied mysteriously. Soon after, Nolan's parents said goodbye and went. They left Thomas in dismay.

He frowned, he hated it when people did that. Now he has to wait ages to find out what. He just had to continue his day and then find out later on. He mostly laid in bed that day, too tired to get back up.

The next evening, Nolan's mother greeted them warmly. She invited them into the living room, where her husband was already waiting there.
"Nolan will come down to us in a moment..."

Thomas nodded, standing behind him mum and waiting for them to go and sit down. He wondered how long the dinner would take, knowing how awkward it would most likely be. Maybe he could fake a stomach ache and leave early?

When the appetizer was served to the table then Nolan came down from the floor on the majestic staircase. He wore matching elegant pants and a beautiful white shirt with a lace corset on top. However, something had changed in his appearance. His belly... It was bigger, and noticeably so.
"Good evening..." he began, and when he saw Thomas he got a little tense. The only vacant seat was next to his neighbor. He sat down there.

Thomas felt tense too. He could feel the stiffness in his shoulders and back before forcing himself to relax. He tried to come across careless, not wanting Nolan to know how much he affected him. He tried looking from the corner of his eye at ex-friend, well at his stomach mostly. He was pregnant now? How strange.

Nolan was slightly flushed. Nolan's mother tried to salvage the situation.
"I told you Thomas, you'll have a surprise..." she replied, and then poured her son some water "Nolan is going to be a mom. That's why he dropped out of college," she added, and the pregnant man lowered his gaze somewhat embarrassed

“Oh right”, Thomas said, acting unbothered. He looked down at the meal he had been served and began to eat it, ignoring what was being said around him. Thomas wondered if Nolan would be a good mum, he remembered the days where they would play with dolls and decided he would be.
