Deacon checked with the receptionist, and discovering that no new patients were due for nearly six weeks got in contact with the Philadelphia clinic to pay them a visit. Soon the five of them, Deacon, Gabrielle, Jocelyn, Alex, and a technician who carried the newly-dead fetus in the patient's uterus in a cooler for the physicians in Philadelphia to see, found themselves in a van driving the five hours to Philadelphia. Deacon drove while Alex rode shotgun, holding his ball belly that rested between his legs on his seat. In the back the technician spoke up, a young woman new to the clinic with almost no knowledge of the infection or how the pregnancies worked, to ask Alex what was going on.
"Well" Alex said, "the infection began almost a year ago. Men seemingly chosen at random became infected with a virus unlike any mankind has seen before. These men initially experienced flu like symptoms which then transitioned to nausea, bloating, and cramping. The virus combines its DNA with the DNA of its host to create a viable embryo which implants itself against the wall of its host's large intestine. But unlike other male pregnancies, this embryo forms its own uterus, complete with a dual placenta which supplies the growing fetus with both blood to and from its hosts in one umbilical cord and partially digested food and waste from the fetus in another. Because the fetus is being supplied with both blood and food from its host, it grows much more rapidly than typical human fetuses." Alex paused to look down at his own belly. "Even though I'm only eight months pregnant, this fetus already weights 16 to 17 pounds. The problem with the deliver is that the uterus has no birth canal. It's entirely enclosed around the fetus. So the first patients who tried to deliver naturally found themselves literally trying to push out their entire insides along with the fetus, still in its uterus. Even worse, the uterus is incredibly tough and covered in vascularization, so c sections are extremely difficult and almost always fatal to the patient and fetus. Even the most potent abortion drugs seem to have no effect on the fetus, forcing the infected me to carry each fetus to term." As Alex spoke, he shifted his weight in his seat and pressed his thighs together, as if uncomfortable. "Deacon, you really gotta pull this van over, I've got to pee like a racehorse" Alex said, the effects of the fetus' weight over his pelvis clearly taking their toll.
