The pain of his jaw bone cracking apart was unbearable. Khell knew it saved him from choking to death on the pod, but that didn't lessen the sensation of his bones splintering and then jerking apart from the sockets. How was he even going to recover from this? Making things even worse was the total indifference he received from the mantis. The beast didn't seek to find out if he was all right or to even help.
Khell's tongue hung loosely out of his mouth without a lower jaw to keep it in place. He felt a hard bulge push against his sternum as his stomach muscles forced it upward. His lungs burned against the pressure. Another pain, wrenching sound gurgled up out of his throat at the same time as the sixth pod. It stretched his lips open wide, the corners of his mouth cracking and bleeding. With a final heave, it plopped into the hole.

The mantis covered the sixth seed with dirt before he picked up the womb again and flew it to the last mound. Once again he dug a hole, this one so wide and deep that he could fit the entire girth of the womb inside. He forced the alien to his knees at the edge of the hole then grabbed the back of the invader's head and roughly shoved it toward the hole. He ignored the strange colored fluid that flowed from the corners of the alien's mouth as his focus was on the last seed.
The womb made strange, unearthly sounds as he tried to force the last pod from his body but the mantis offered no support. He would do his part and no more. He watched the womb struggle with the final seed his arms and legs jerking widely as the pod moved. The mantis had no idea that Khell was in pain, that the newcomer's jaw hung in an unnatural way. He turned his head to look at the other mound and sure enough, the first seed already sprouted from the mound. Pale yellow vines which in time would darken to their adult color already grew and crept over the mound. Seeing the womb's success, he pushed on the alien's back trying to force the last pod out.

Khell would have fought back if he was able. The mantis was much stronger than him and the weight of his body severely limited his mobility. He did try grabbing at the arms forcing his head into the dirt, but both his hands flew to his throat instead. The last pod was the biggest. Khell almost couldn't breath as it slowly yet surely moved up his esophagus. Gold tears dripped from his eyes and mixed with the fluorescent purple blood leaking from the corners of his mouth. Khell groaned angrily when the mantis started shoving him in the back. It wasn't helping! He slammed his palms onto the grass and lurched forward. He had to do this. He had to do this! It was either this or death.
Finally, Khell forced the seventh and final pod out. It landed in the dirt hole with a heavy-sounding thud. He dropped onto his side, limbs shaking, gasping desperately. His jaw throbbed wildly. He watched the mantis cover the seed pod with dirt and pat it flat, seeming very pleased with the results. Khell couldn't hold back a sob. Now that his body could relax, his mind grasped fully the trauma of what he just endured, and the sort of nightmares that still awaited him.

The mantis clicked and chirped once the last seed was buried under the fertile soil. He would bring the womb back in one cycle and show him just how lush and thriving the forest he birthed was. There were once was just seven yellow mounds, an amazing forest would spring up in its place.
When the mantis finished his tasked, he moved to the womb and stared down at it. Purple liquid dribbled from the alien's mouth and gold streaked down its face. The mantis made a strange chirp then he touched the stretched skin of the broken jaw trying to figure out how to put it back together. He wasn't gentle; he didn't know the term but instead he shoved roughly on the hanging bone as if he was setting it back in place. He moved it left then right pulled it down then tried to force it up but nothing seemed to work and the womb made the strange sounds again. What did those sounds mean exactly? Did the alien enjoy this?

Khell's eyes flew open and he screamed. What was the monster trying to do to him?! "Stop! Stop it!" he shouted, though the words sounded slurred due to his tongue being unable to move properly. "It's broken, you stupid idiot! You're hurting me!" He swung his arm out, trying to chase the mantis away from him. The pain was so intense it made him see black spots across his vision. Could a creature like that even understand? The mantis had an obvious exoskeleton. If part of it ever cracked or broke, the mantis probably just shed the problem area and grew back a new layer. Khell didn't have that luxury. "It hurts! Don't you get it? I'm in pain! My mouth is in pain!"

The mantis continued to try and 'fix' the alien until there was another crack pop sound. He stopped, took his hand away, and just tilted his head back and forth. Maybe the womb needed nutrients? Yes that had to be it. The alien would stop making the strange sounds, the gold fluid would not leaking for his eyes if he had some nourishment. He held the alien back by the arms and popped open his mandibles. His tongue uncurled slowly as a glob of golden 'honey' steadily grew on the tip.
"This will help," the words came from all around as the mantis forced his tongue into Khell's mouth and down his throat.

Khell gasped when he suddenly found himself forced onto his back with his arms pinned out at his sides. "What are you doing?!" he growled. His large belly wobbled as he struggled, but the mantis was too strong. Having a broken jaw made swallowing difficult, so Khell mostly chocked on the nectar dripping down his throat. What the hell was this supposed to do? How would nectar help him now? The mantis was an idiot. Just some ignorant wild beast!
Reaching his breaking point, Khell lifted his legs and kicked the mantis off him. He gagged when the long tongue came flying out of his throat, but he didn't waste time getting onto his knees. "Are you stupid?" the Zioruta growled. "What makes you thi--" Suddenly, Khell felt his jaw go rigid followed by a series of grinding pops. He grabbed his own face, screaming through the pain. Now what? Now what?! Just when he thought his skull was going to break apart, the pain stopped. Khell was silent for a moment, panting and shaking, but his jaw didn't hurt anymore. He experimentally opened his mouth and found that everything was healed.
His gaze jumped over towards the mantis. "What did you just do?"

"Fixed!" The mantis happily chirped as he did what appeared to be a little happy dance by wiggling his thorax. "I fixed you! Nectar gives life and makes it better.
The mantis fluffed up his wings for good measure then moved behind the womb again. He grabbed the alien with his legs before he spread his wings and took to the sky.
"Look at your forest," the mantis chirped as he flew low over the mounds. Each of the seven had the start of a vast network of growing vines but the last mound already had a sapling growing toward the light. "You did this. You made them. You are a good womb. Will plant many seeds and go great forests." He had plans for the womb when they returned to the nest. He would feed the alien as much he as could.

The secretions from the mantis' tongue had... healing properties? This was unheard of. Did all the creatures on this planet posses the same abilities? Khell's mind raced until he felt insectoid limbs wrap around him again. His heart sank a bit at the realization his role as a brood mother wasn't done yet. He still had the mantis' eggs growing in his belly.
His forest? Yellow eyes looked down at the ground below, and he was astounded to see vines already growing out of the ground. Life seemed to grow at an accelerated rate on Drecuvis. The seed pods matured in his gut after only a week and down they were already sprouting into trees. The mantis' eggs would only gestate in him for two weeks. Zioruta were pregnant for an entire year before their young were developed enough for birth. "I'm not a womb," he grunted, cheeks turning pink with an embarrassed blush. "I am a Major in the Zioruta Marines. My name is Khell Voralum."

"You are a womb," the mantis hissed as he flew the womb over the budding forest. "Your name has no meaning here. You are only live to serve your purpose and your purpose is that of womb."
The mantis wasn't about to explain how the planet worked. How the planet could restore and replenish, nurture and mate, the womb if it would just accept the role. Every creature on the planet would do what it could to restore the womb to its original state. The womb would be filled time and time again as long as the planet required.

"N-Now see here!" Khell stammered, going from embarrassed to indignant. "My name does have meaning! It's who I am! Just because you decided to breed with me doesn't negate the fact that I'm a Zioruta. Don't you have a name, or should I just start calling you 'beast' and see how you like it?"
Khell recognized the border where the grassy plains met the marshlands. He tried paying closer attention to the landscape this time. It was easier to do now that he wasn't trying to throat birth a seed pod. He noticed the marsh draining into a few caves and guessed they led into some underground caverns. If he managed to escape from the mantis, he might be able to hide down in their depths. The real issue, however, was getting off this planet. Would he spend the rest of his life running from the animals and plants on Drecuvis, forever avoiding their attempts to breed with him?
Back down in the nest, Khell found himself once again stuck to the alcove in the wall. He was exhausted after expelling the seeds from his body, so he hoped the mantis would just leave him alone to sleep and get back his strength.

"I am Embersoul," the mantis answered when he landed at the nest and carried the womb deep within. "I am to protect this land from invaders and create you new life as we need. What is 'beast'? Is it a good name?"
He stuck the womb to the wall again making sure the creature's knees were bent and the belly rested comfortably on the floor. "You need more," he unfurled his tongue again, gripped Khell's chin, and slowly fed the organ down the womb's throat. He watched the honey move along the thick tongue, rippling down the alien's throat before it filled his belly. "Womb of the planet, you are a life giver."

"No, beast is not a good name," Khell replied. His long tail twitched behind him, expressing his agitation. So, Embersoul here was a guardian of the planet. It made sense now why the forest transported him to that glowing oasis. The plants more or less offered Khell to the guardian as a sacrifice, and now here he was swollen with eggs.
Again, he tried turning his head away, but the mantis kept him firmly in place. Bit by bit, Khell was succumbing to the feedings, but he still had some fight left in him. The nectar pooled into his gravid gut. It surrounded his clutch of eggs, keeping them cushioned until they absorbed all of it and Embersoul had to feed him more. Granted, the nectar kept Khell fed as well. He'd not felt hungry or thirsty once since the mantis impregnated him.
"Womb of the planet?" he echoed after the mantis finished feeding him. The way Embersoul described it, Khell could look forward to a lifetime of giving birth to flora and fauna alike here on Drecuvis. "Can't the animals and plants on this planet reproduce for themselves? With each other? Why do I have to be the one?"

Embersoul placed the tip of one of his middle legs on Khell's belly then circled around for several minutes. "Wombs are rare but they happenhere. Hard to find and maybe be filled. Can't be used if filled already. You are different. Several can implant in you." he answered as he watched the alien's skin move under his hand. His eggs were now the only creatures in the womb and he chirped happily. "Grow bigger inside you."
He patted the alien's stomach now full of nectar and eggs with a series of chirps and clicks. He couldn't wait for the clutch to be born and see his children start to fly.

If the ability to reproduce was such a rarity, then Drecuvis' ecosystem was far more fragile than Khell initially thought. He wasn't excited about being the kind of womb that could carry multiple offspring at once. Briefly, he reflected on his life back on his home planet. Khell had been putting off finding a mate and bearing young in favor of advancing his career in the marines. Now here he was in an ironic twist of fate as the brood mother to an entire planet and all the beasts that called it home.
Thirteen days came and went, just as the mantis predicted. Khell's belly grew bigger each day until he looked ripe with nearly two dozen young. His belly was massive, violet skin stretched tightly over his stuffed womb. The Major wasn't sure how he was still breathing. For the moment, he was alone, but he knew Embersoul would return soon enough. A fine layer of sweat covered Khell's body. His belly shuddered with a contraction. The pain converged on his engorged, pulsating navel. All the eggs quivered with anticipation inside his straining womb. Today was their day.

Embersoul returned and found the womb wet from some secretions. He touched the womb's stretched, distended skin and made a long click. "They come?" He asked as he knelt down beside the womb. He cut the alien free of the gluey trap and forced the creature to his feet. "They are ready!" He exclaimed as a wave rippled through Khell's belly. He placed his middle legs on either side of the womb's belly button.
"Open your mouth," Embersoul unrolled his tongue offering the womb nectar. "It will help."

Khell looked up when Embersoul came in through one of the nest's tunnels. He nodded at the question. They'd been coming for a few hours now. His arms shook when cut down from the wall, the muscles sore from being held up for so long. He stumbled onto his feet, barely able to stand even on his long legs due to the weight of his body. The claws on his feet dug into the sticky floor in an attempt to gain stable footing.
Again, his belly visibly quivered. Pressure started deep in his core and then moved through him like a wave until reaching his bellybutton. The fecund orb dripped with sweat. When Embersoul offered him nectar this time, Khell didn't refuse. The mantis finally tamed him into submission a couple short days ago. The Zioruta simply nodded again and opened his mouth. Khell drank the sweet, nourishing honey. It pooled in his belly while helping ease the pain of each contraction. The golden liquid filled him until it started dripping from his fat navel. He gripped his rippling flanks in each hand and moaned as the first egg started pushing forward. "It's coming..."

Embersoul pulled his tongue out of Khell slowly then cut a large hole in the wall of the nest. He filled the hole with nectar before he rolled his tongue back and closed his mandibles. He took up the spot behind the womb before he wrapped two pairs of his legs around the womb's side while firmly planting his 'feet' so the womb could lean back against him for support while it supported the alien's back and helped him remain upright. This freed up Khell's hands so they could help push the eggs out from the side of the massive belly.
"The eggs are wide, wider than ever," Embersoul explained. "It will take time and there will be much pain." He tried to sound understanding but there was so much excitement in his body. His clutch would be born from the womb. His wings flapped with nervous energy as a series of ripples moved over the massive belly. "The first egg is ready."

Embersoul's words weren't very encouraging. Khell's navel was already the size of his fist. Would that be big enough to birth the wide eggs? His belly convulsed with a contraction and his bellybutton heaved, oozing more of the nectar. Khell realized it was trying to lubricate him for the passing of the eggs. He let out a low groan while arching his back. The first egg pushed forward, bulging out his bellybutton even more. Sweat dripped down his broad carapace. The white, curved markings all across his body slowly turned red as the pain began building. "Nnnnyah!" A much stronger contraction gripped his womb. Khell thrust his belly outward. His navel undulated until the first egg slipped free and landed on the floor of the nest with a wet plop!
Khell panted, trying to catch his breath, but already the second egg was pushing forward. One contraction after the other assaulted the Zioruta's rippling, convulsing orb. His bellybutton pulsated, dripping with nectar, bulging every time an egg forced its way out.

Embersoul watched in delight as his eggs were slowly birthed. He rubbed the alien's back as best he could and offered nectar when Khell seemed to need it. He listened to the womb's cries as a massive and what appeared to be extremely painful contraction forced the alien's bellybutton wider than any egg before it. He felt the womb's neck and back go limp against him with heaving breaths.
"You are a good womb," Embersoul complimented in his own special way. The womb made another guttural sound before his back went rigid again and the alien's hands balled into tight fists. He felt Khell push with all his might but the egg refused to push forward out the alien's bellybutton. He listened to the pained scream of the womb, felt the strain of the muscles, and still the egg did not move. He wondered if this egg would emerge from the womb. One of his knees went into the small of the invader's back and with the extra leverage, the egg finally moved. The egg crowned about four inches before it fell into the nectar filled hole.
"Still many eggs to go, womb."
