The room marked on the door as containing a "Selachian merman" (with a homemade sign under the label reading "BEWARE OF SHARK") was big and octagonal, with about half of it utterly empty as if someone had just moved out, and the other half full of flotsam and jetsam- broken chairs, a bed supported by stacks of old phone books, piles of broken-spined thriller and romance novels, a few things that looked like they had been stolen from the labs or cafeteria, and a big diagram of the coast of Northern Germany on the wall. The center of the room held a deep, dark well; the occupant was currently in it, floating in a sort of meditation.
