James didn’t answer but signed the forms anyway, it’s not like they would know if he lied or not. They carried on down the hallway until the nurse opened a door and went inside.

Carsen watched James out of the corner of his eye to see if he was coming with him. He was a little scared. The nurses helped him sit on the bed and put on a hospital shirt. “The doctor will be here soon. Wait here with your husband”, she said to James, leaving them alone. Carsen had an IV on and was lying on a soft bed.

“Are you alright?” James asked, he grabbed Carson’s hand, “how bad does it hurt?”

Carsen cramped quietly when he felt a cramp and looked at James. “It hurts more and more...” he said red on his face

“Is there anything I can do to help?” He asked, “you can squeeze my hand”.

“Thank you...” he said and grabbed his hand and looked at him very focused, “I’m afraid... I didn’t go to the doctor because I didn’t have any money. What if my child is sick?”

“Then we will get them the best doctor to take care of them” James replied. He started stroking Carson hand, “but I’m sure they’ll be healthy”.

Carsen gasped as he felt pain, and the belt around his belly made loud noises. “Why... Why are you doing so much for me?” he asked, looking at him blushingly.

“Because I like helping people” he replied, “and I just feel rather protective of you”. He jumped as the belt made noises, “was that a contraction?”

Carsen nodded and bit his lip “Uhh... It really hurts”, he creased slightly clutching his hand

“Oh, would you like me to ask the nurses if you can have some pain killers?” He asked, his eyebrows furrowed with concern.

“Yes, please”, he replied, taking a deep breath as he loosened his handshake. The birth became more and more real.

“Ok I’ll be back” he said as he left the room to search for a nurse. One he found one and asked he returned. “They said they will come in a second”.

Carsen nodded and began to massage his stomach. “I didn’t have time to come up with a name...” He muttered to him and then remained silent for a moment: “Maybe... Could you choose a name?” he asked shyly.

“Are you sure?” James asked shocked, “I’d love to but it’s such a big responsibility”.

Carsen nodded, “I like it...” he said smiling with small tears of joy in the corners of his eyes. They heard the door open. A doctor and a nurse came in

“They must be here with the pains killers” he murmured. He stood up and walked over to the corner of the room, not wanting to be in anyones way.
