Shu was recently formed after it's leader, Liu Bei, took the lands of Jing and Yi Province from his clansmen. With the alliance of Wu, they contended against Wei over unification of the land. Things were looking up, until all hell broke loose at Fan Castle.
Liu Bei's sworn brother, Guan Yu, had succeeded in capturing Fan Castle from Wei, but this was all part of an enemy plot to trap them in a pincer attack against Wu, who betrayed them, and a flood attack. Guan Yu's son, Guan Ping had lost his life and decided to retreat, but his youngest son Guan Suo, was seperated and lost in the battle.
Guan Suo was quickly surrounded by Wu soldiers, but rather than being killed on the spot, Wei negotiated for his life, making him a hostage. The young male was now tied up in a carriage to Xuchang, where he was fearful of what would happen to him.
